Tips for Staying Safe During Summer Activities
Each year, summer ushers in a host of beloved activities, from long days at the pool to leisurely hours spent tending our gardens. However, many favorite summer pastimes come with a risk of injury. Many people, especially children, end up in emergency rooms in the summer thanks to common seasonal accidents. To help prevent accidents, we’re sharing a few expert tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this summer.
Lawn Mower Safety
An estimated 143,000 people end up in emergency rooms annually for lawn mower-related injuries, according to Consumer Reports. When you are mowing your lawn, there are a few precautions you can take to help preserve safety. Always wear protective gear, such as gloves, eye protection, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. It is important to never mow the lawn barefoot or in sandals or flip-flops! Keep children and pets away from the lawn mower, especially when in use. Children should never ride on a mower, even if the blades are not running. Before mowing your lawn, look around and remove sticks, rocks, and debris. Using these tips will help prevent lawn mower-related injuries!
Exercise Caution in the Water
Whether in the pool or the sea, swimming is a hallmark of summer fun. Unfortunately, drowning remains a risk, so follow these safety tips, even if you’re an experienced swimmer. Never swim alone, and be sure to swim only in supervised areas. Always wear a life jacket on small boats, and know where life jackets are located on larger boats. Children should always wear life jackets! Never dive into shallow water or water where you are unsure of the depth. Avoid swimming during storms, rising waters, or strong currents. Monitor local alerts to know when rip currents are present.
Bounce Carefully
Whether it’s a backyard trampoline or an inflatable bounce house, these fun-filled summer activities can easily lead to sprains and fractures, not to mention head and neck injuries for those who do backflips and somersaults. Follow these guidelines to ensure safer bouncing. Avoid somersaults or flips without proper training and instruction. It is important to always ensure there is adult supervision and keep in mind that children under age six should not use full-size trampolines. Additionally, do not use trampolines without nets to help prevent falls.
